The town of Telluride was founded in the late 1800s with a mining boom. The town began to take on quite a character of its own, giving rise to a hotel and opera house, as well as brothels, saloons, gambling halls and the like. It was indeed a frontier mining town with all the trappings. And with all the gold and silver, the local bank made a tempting target, and was purportedly the site of Butch Cassidy's first heist, netting him a take of $24,580. Today, Telluride's gold is its white powder.
Telluride is located 127 miles southeast of Grand Junction and 125 miles from Durango, CO. Four airlines (American, Continental, United and America West) from six major cities (Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Newark, Denver and Phoenix) fly into either Montrose (65 miles from the resort) or Telluride (6 miles from town).
